Join us for the inaugural reading and conversation with Poet Elizabeth Alexander, moderated by
The Washington Post book critic and editor Ron Charles.
Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, essayist, playwright, and teacher. She has published six books of poems:
- The Venus Hottentot
- Body of Life
- Antebellum Dream Book
- American Sublime - one of the three finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the American Library Association's Notable Books of the Year
- Miss Crandall's School for Young Ladies and Little Misses of Color - her first young adult collection, co-authored by Marilyn Nelson, and winner of the 2008 Connecticut Book Award
- Crave Radiance: New and Selected Poems 1990-2010 - winner of the 2010 Paterson Prize for Poetry
Her two collections of essays are
The Black Interior and
Power and Possibility. Her play
Diva Studies was produced at the Yale School of Drama.
In 2009, she composed and delivered
Praise Song for the Day for the inauguration of President Barack Obama.
Ron Charles is the deputy editor of
The Washington Post's book section and a weekly fiction critic. For several years, he also edited The Post's "Poet's Choice" column in Book World. His reviews have won the National Book Critics Circle Award for best criticism and 1st place for Arts & Entertainment Commentary from the Society for Features Journalism.
Washingtonian Magazine named him as one of the 40 people who shaped DC in 2010. Before coming to The Post, he was the Books editor at
The Christian Science Monitor. He and his wife, an English teacher, live in Bethesda, Md.
